Lithuania‘s Utena District Municipality is actively participating in the Building Europe with Local Councillors network, aiming at promoting EU activities and engaging the public in discussions about EU policies. In an interview with the regional radio station, Utena Radio in April 2024, BELC member Ms Eglė Zarankaitė and municipality advisor Ms Gerda Rušienė revealed how this project is being developed and implemented in Utena.

Ms Zarankaitė explained in the interview that she uses the “Futurium” platform to collaborate with members from other municipalities across Europe. The project involves sharing best practices and discussing issues related to digitalisation, education, employment, environment, and climate change. The main purpose of BELC is to convey information to local residents - each municipality selects its representative, who directly communicates with citizens, discussing the most pressing issuesfor the EU  and future ideas.

She pointed out in the Lithuanian-language interview that BELC activities started with initial meetings and discussions. As the 2024 European elections approach, sessions with residents are planned to raise awareness and encourage participation in the elections. This initiative is vital for strengthening the bond between the local community and the European Union, while also keeping them informed about the EU’s activities and opportunities.

By participating in this project, the local councillor mentioned that Utena municipality aims not only to address local issues, but also to engage residents in broader EU discussions, promoting their civic engagement and awareness. Collaborating with other municipalities and international partners, Utena can bring back best practices and innovative ideas, adapting them to the local context and the town can benefit from this partnership.
