Danish BELC member participates in panel debate on local implementation of EU Climate Policy

Mads Sørensen, mayor and member of the municipal council in Varde Municipality, as well as chairman of the South Denmark EU Office, took part in a panel debate, titled "The Interaction between European and Regional/Local Climate Policy" at the Climate People’s Meeting in Middelfart. This annual event provides an opportunity for 40,000 Danish citizens to meet and discuss climate policy with decision-makers.

The debate brought together representatives from local, regional, and European levels, focusing on how EU climate legislation can be translated into tangible local initiatives. Mads Sørensen represented the municipal perspective, addressing issues such as how local authorities can implement green energy projects and engage citizens in the transition to a sustainable future.

A significant part of the discussion centered on the challenges that arise when the EU's green agenda encounters local resistance to projects, such as placing wind turbines and solar panels near residential areas or in natural landscapes. The role of agriculture and industry in the green transition was also emphasized, alongside the responsibility of citizens to drive change.

For Mads Sørensen, bridging the gap between the EU’s climate goals and local realities is essential, with municipalities playing a key role in fostering sustainable development through dialogue with citizens. Drawing on his experience in both local politics and EU decision-making, Sørensen contributed to the discussion on how collaboration across various levels is crucial to achieving the green transition.
